A Book to Study, Not Read

30 June 2021  | Reviewed by Jack Hoehn Stephen C. Meyer is very easy to listen to and very understandable when he participates in the many debates he has had presenting the scientific basis of Intelligent Design. His two previous major books, Darwin’s Doubt (2013) and Signature in the Cell (2009), can both be read […]

by Robert T. Johnston  |  21 June 2021  | Over the weekend of June 11-12, 2021, I attended (via YouTube livestream and recordings) the Sydney Adventist Forum’s conference on the “Age of Life on Earth.” It featured excellent presentations by well-qualified presenters, most with PhDs in relevant disciplines. Lynden Rogers and the other organizers arranged […]

The Rocks Don’t Lie, and Neither Does God

By Paul Priest  |  23 June 2020  | Much of Adventist origins theology is based on a young earth view of creation, which can be summarized with the following points: The earth was created about 6,000 years ago. It was created in 6 days. It was created perfect. Adam and Eve were the first humans. […]

Adventist Tomorrow #7a: A Robust Creationism

by Jack Hoehn | 15 July 2018 | There is a confluence of ideas coming from within and without the Seventh-day Adventist church, that suggests places this church can go with its theology and mission. Jack wants to talk with you about some of them. This article #7a is on an expanded creationism, and parts […]

Converted by Evidence

By Jack Hoehn Günter Bechly, PhD, is a German scientist. He was raised agnostic or atheist by his family, his schools, his culture. Given no religious training or exposure, this was a scientific, rational, non-superstitious world to him and his family. He was an excellent student and graduated summa cum laude (that means very smart!) […]

Survey: Strong Support for Women’s Ordination in US

March 31, 2017:      A survey of Adventists in the United States indicates that 86 percent support women serving as pastors and agree that these women should be ordained in the same way that men are. Less than 9 percent oppose the idea. Asked if they would support “having a female pastor in my own church,” […]

Ages of the Earth and Mankind: No Answers in Genesis or Ellen White, Part II

by Ervin Taylor, June 6, 2016:     In Part I, we noted that in 2015, the corporate Seventh-day Adventist Church, in General Conference assembled, adopted a “fundamental” position that declared that the creation of life on this planet occurred “recently,” that it was accomplished in six, literal, 24-hour days, and that a recent, literal, world-wide flood […]

Noah in the Navajo: Conversation with a Geologist in Zion National Park

by John McLarty, March 10, 2016:    In May, 2014, I was hiking the Zion Canyon Overlook Trail with geologist Gerry Bryant. Zion National Park’s iconic cliffs of cross-bedded sandstone inspire wonder, of course. They also pose commanding questions. Where did all that sand come from? How did it end up here in southern Utah? What […]

Adventist Tomorrow: Fresh Ideas While Waiting for Jesus, by Jack Hoehn

ADVENTIST TOMORROW by Jack Hoehn has become the best-selling book that Adventist Today has published, selling over 850 copies so far (480+ in the paperback and  370+ in the electronic Kindle version).  It is being read by Adventist College and University students.  It is being read in Canada, in Australia,  in South Africa, in Kenya and in Spain, Germany, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.

Who is reading Jack’s book?  Jonathan Butler said it is on his reading list.  Smuts Van Rooyen says he is enjoying it.  Pastors John Hughson and Kenneth Preston have highly recommended it.  Pastor Kevin McGill in Seattle quoted from the book in one of his sermons.   Carmen Lau has read the book.  Jennifer Ogden, Beverly Beem, Linda Nottingham,  Cherri-Ann Farquharson, Gina Olberg have all read it with positive reviews.

Even Clifford Goldstein told Jack he liked the chapter on Intoxicants and got a new idea from the chapter Not a Rib, “but not much else.” (Jack accepts this as good a review from Cliff as he could ever hope for!)

You too don’t have to agree with Jack to read the book.  The ideas discussed in the book are important for all caring Adventists to carefully consider.  It is up to you to decide what you want to do about these issues.  Is there a future for Adventism as well as a past?  And what might that future look like?

Readers who like the book say:   It’s a good read.  I have enjoyed it immensely.  A very valuable piece of work.  Once I started it, I could not put it down.  Very well written.  An unprecedented and transformative rescue of Adventist thought.  A genuine pleasure and a relief.  Added very richly to my heart, soul and mind.

The book is good for individual consideration.  It can be even better as the basis for group discussions — Sabbath School classes, book clubs,  classrooms, workers’ retreats focusing on the challenges of tomorrow.  After you read your copy share it with someone else, or gift them their own copy.   There are 92,000 SDA congregations in the world, most of  them should be having  discussions on important topics like these.
