ATSS: Reinder Bruinsma, “The Long and Troubled History of Adventist-Catholic Relationships”

Since the 19th century, Adventists have regarded Roman Catholics as enemies. In this, they were not unlike many American Protestants: anti-Catholicism was common in Protestant America—not least because the many poor Catholic immigrants who were flooding into American cities led to a reactionary nativism.
In this class, Dr. Bruinsma will recap themes in his new book, and lead us in taking another look at this turbulent relationship:
- How and why did Adventism become so anti-Catholic?
- What is the role of The Great Controversy?
- Has Catholicism changed?
- Should we reconsider our attitude?

Reinder Bruinsma lives in the Netherlands with his wife, Aafje. He has served the Adventist Church in various assignments in publishing, education, and church administration on three continents.
