Union College Announces Dr. Yamileth Bazan as Its 30th President

Union College is poised for a new era of leadership as Dr. Yamileth Bazan steps in as the institution’s 30th president, coinciding with its transition to Union Adventist University. Starting her term on July 1, Dr. Bazan, affectionately known as “Yami,” brings a distinguished legacy of dedication to education, ministry, and student mentorship.
Gary Thurber, chair of Union’s Board of Trustees and president of the Mid-America Union Conference, expressed confidence in the selection process, emphasizing Dr. Bazan’s alignment with the values and mission of the Adventist church and the university.
Dr. Bazan’s tenure in Adventist higher education spans over 17 years, showcasing her versatile leadership as the associate dean for Student Affairs at Loma Linda University School of Medicine and the vice president of Student Life at La Sierra University. Her roles have covered a broad spectrum of student services and support, underscoring her commitment to fostering an enriching campus life. She holds a Ph.D. in leadership from Andrews University, with additional degrees in administration, leadership, and education from La Sierra University and Loma Linda University. Her academic contributions include teaching graduate-level courses in educational leadership and guiding first-year students towards college success.
Reflecting on her engagement with Union College, Dr. Bazan shared her appreciation for the campus’s vibrant community, noting the shared values and mission that resonated with her. “It has been a sweet surprise to see God connect our paths. I am honored to be part of the next exciting chapter for this campus family,” she stated, according to Union’s press release.
Dr. Vinita Sauder, the outgoing president, expressed her satisfaction with Dr. Bazan’s appointment, viewing it as a fulfillment of many prayers. “I can retire happily, knowing that I am leaving Union in the hands of someone so caring and competent. I know God has called her to Union for a purpose,” Sauder concluded.
