U.S Senate Chaplain Barry Black Recovers from Brain Bleed
16 December 2024 |
On Thursday, December 12, it was released that U.S. Senate Chaplain Barry Black was hospitalized for a brain bleed. According to the Associated Press:
“Black, 76, suffered a subdural hematoma earlier this week and is at a local hospital and under the care of the Capitol’s physician, said Rev. Lisa Schultz, Black’s chief of staff. A subdural hematoma is when blood builds up between the skull and the surface of the brain, increasing pressure on the brain.”
When symptoms arose, Chaplain Black’s physician, Dr. Brian Monahan, the attending physician of the United States Congress, implored him to call an emergency line for immediate care. Because of this early intervention, treatment started before his condition became critical, and he is on the road to a “smooth recovery.” In a Facebook statement by Pastor Ted Wilson on December 13, the General Conference president shared that he immediately sent a message to Chaplain Black through General Andrew R Harewood, a Seventh-day Adventist pastor and recently retired US Deputy Chief of Chaplains for the Army Reserve, as well as through voicemail. On Friday evening, the chaplain returned Pastor Wilson’s call, sharing how God’s use of Dr. Monahan’s intervention led him through the health crisis.
Barry Black has been the U.S Senate chaplain since 2003, existing as a calming, Spirit-filled presence through major political upheavals and offering prayer during critical times such as the prolonged government shutdown in 2013, Donald Trump’s impeachment in 2019, and the Capitol insurrection on January 6, 2021.
After decades of Black’s bathing the public in prayer, it is now the public’s turn to bathe Chaplain Black in prayer, hoping for a complete recovery.
