Missionary Couple Killed in Fire at Adventist Facility in Philippines
31 August 2019 | A fire at a residential building owned by Adventist Hospital in Calbayong City, central Philippines, has killed a missionary couple.
Dr. Pacifico Maypa, 60, and his nurse wife Delie Mae Maypa, 57, died as a result of the fire on the island of Samar.
SunStar Philippines reported that the cause of the fire that started at about 4:20 a.m. August 31, is being investigated.
The missionaries had worked at the hospital since November 2018 and had previously served in medical missions in Zambia for eight years.
Both victims were from the Philippines.
The area’s Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) identified the location of the fire as Purok -4, Barangay San Policarpo, Calbayog.
Postmortems for both victims were requested by the Calbayong City Health Office.
As of June 30, 2018, there were 1,280 Adventist churches in the Central Philippine Union Conference, and 190,868 members according to the denomination’s Office of Archives, Statistics and Research.
