Matthew Korpman: What Christianity Gets Wrong
30 December 2022 |
For many Christians across the world, doubt is condemned as evidence for a lack of faith and is usually taught as something that true believers do not engage with. Yet, nowhere in the Gospel of John does Jesus condemn Thomas for doubting. Instead, doubt is praised throughout the gospels as something that even the faithful do. Thomas, rather than demonstrating why doubt is wrong, shows us the healthy limits that skepticism can serve Christian faith.
As conservative and progressive Christians battle each other over what is allowed to be questioned and what the limits of faith are, Thomas’ story helps to serve as a reminder of the important role that faith plays in our lives.
