Jesus vs. the Narrative Controllers
In 1998, Saturday Night Live aired a School House Rock parody that was later banned. The episode was removed because it outlined how a small number of powerful corporations controlled much of the news and entertainment media. This “media-opoly” created the illusion of choice for audiences, while controlling information in ways that protected corporate interests.
This modern example of controlling narratives mirrors a challenge Jesus faced during His ministry. He often encountered opposition from the Pharisees and Sadducees who resented His grace-centered approach to faith (Luke 10:25; 5:30; 15:2) and were uncomfortable being held accountable for their legalism (Luke 20:19; 12:1; 18:9-14). As the religious leaders felt their control over the religious narrative slipping away, they sought to discredit and silence Jesus.
At Adventist Today, we strive to follow Christ’s example of engaging deeply with faith and encouraging thoughtful reflection. In a denominational media landscape where open conversations, exploring different perspectives, and holding ourselves accountable are increasingly rare, we aim to create a space where these values can thrive.
By supporting Adventist Today through our year-end fundraiser, you can help us continue providing content that sparks thoughtful discussion and keeps readers informed. We are committed to exploring important and sometimes challenging topics with integrity and a balanced perspective, all while remaining rooted in our commitment to faith. Your support will enable us to maintain a platform for open dialogue and diverse viewpoints within our denominational media, fostering a more informed and engaged Adventist community.
