Editorial: “Last Chance: Let Us Send You the Latest Adventist Today Magazine”
A lot of you know Adventist Today (AT) because of the interesting and challenging articles on our website. But in fact AT has been publishing a quarterly paper magazine for over 30 years.
I think you’ll like the magazine that is about to be mailed out next week. It’s titled “A Curious and Charming History.” It starts out with an editorial that asserts that we can love our history without being locked into it. We can appreciate our history, I believe, without being locked into it. We don’t need to live in an Ellen White log cabin, or even pretend we do: we can upgrade to a modern faith without sacrificing the best values of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
You won’t want to miss the rest of the stories.
- Amanda Goulbourne tells us about a well-known colporteur who emasculated himself in obedience to Matthew 19:12. (It is unknown whether he performed the operation himself, or found a willing physician.)
- Warren Trenchard tells about an Old Testament prophetess named Huldah, who became a model for educating Adventist women because of a mistranslation.
- Most of us know where the date 1844 came from. But historian Donald Casebolt shows the curious selection of October 22, based on the presumed time of the Palestinian barley harvest.
- Matthew Lucio tells us how impressed Ellen White was with the handsome and strong Samoan men who carried her and her family off the ship when it stopped on the way to Australia.
- And Ron Graybill traces the exact words of one of Ellen White’s visions to a small book called Mirror of the Soul—which supplied several of her messages from God.
