Burman University Rejected by Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference Due to Saturday Conflict
May 18, 2017: The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) has rejected an application by Adventist-run Burman University to join.
The 2016-2017 season marked the second application attempt by the university.
The application filed on behalf of both the university’s men’s and women’s basketball teams was rejected due to what the ACAC called “scheduling limitations insisted by Burman University.”
In an article on the failed application, the Lacombe Globe explained that the scheduling limitation refered to was the Saturday Sabbath kept by the university from Friday sundown to Saturday sundown.
“We proposed an alternate schedule that we believed was a reasonable compromise for everyone but the members of the ACAC did not agree,” said Burman’s Athletics Director, Ron Schafer in a statement released today.
Burman University is an independent yet publicly funded institution. It underwent a change of name in 2014 from its previous name, Canadian Union College. The name Burman University was implemented in May 2015.
