ATSS: Marcelo Reis, “Lord’s Supper or Lost Supper? The Evolution of the ‘Sacramental Meal’ Between the 1st & 3rd Centuries”
26 February 2025 |
Throughout Christian history, the Lord’s Supper has played a central role in the church’s theology and liturgy. It is perceived by some Christian traditions as the central ritual of the Christian faith.
Despite its being frequently celebrated, not many Christians understand the historical development of the Lord’s Supper to the form in which it is celebrated by most Christians nowadays. Do we celebrate the Lord’s Supper as the early church did? If not, what has changed? What are the implications of these changes for the “sacramental meal” today?
In this presentation we will analyze what the Bible says about the Lord’s Supper, and track its development in the church in the first three centuries.
