ATSS: Charles Scriven, “Leaders, Misleaders, and Renewal”
14 August 2024 |
In this class I will use scripture both to make a critique of leadership as it is in Adventist life, and to set forth a better way. I will discuss how Christian leadership matters by using James Davison Hunter’s Democracy and Solidarity: On the Cultural Roots of the American Political Crisis, a recent book that links the current American cultural crisis to the threat of secular nihilism.
Teacher:
Charles Scriven, now retired in Tennessee, taught at Walla Walla, served as pastor at Sligo in Takoma Park, and was president of Columbia Union College (now Washington Adventist) and, later, of Kettering College. For about 13 years, he was chair of the board of the Adventist Forum. His publications (besides many journal articles) include The Transformation of Culture: Christian Social Ethics after H. Richard Niebuhr and The Promise of Peace, the latter church-published (Pacific Press).
Moderator:
Gerald Lofthouse is a retired physician living in the Chicago area. He continues to work with hospice patients, and restores classic cars as a hobby.
