Atlantic Union College Officially Proposed to Be Sold
21 November 2024 |
Since 2012, administrators at Atlantic Union College have been announcing plans to reopen, each year kicking it down the pike. Over the last decade, there have been hopes of partnering with Washington Adventist University, trying to reopen without accreditation, struggling with the conference’s cutting funding, a Chinese corporation’s offering to take it over and convert it into a prep school, and handling a $2.4 million debt. However, as of November 2024, it seems Adventist Union College has reached the end of the line, and is finally selling the last of its properties. Many who have been following the saga see this as long overdue. “The college has been on life support for years,” stated an anonymous alumnus. Andrews University’s signing an Agreement of Intent with Atlantic Union College in June 2023 was the last effort to revive the dying school; however, as with previous attempts, the agreement was futile.
The Lancaster Select Board Meeting convened last week to announce that the school’s remaining property would be sold to the town or back to the Southern New England Conference to be repurposed. This sale would include the main campus, dormitories, dairy farm, and surrounding land. While the buildings and land have been set for sale, the fate of Atlantic Union College’s memorabilia is undetermined. Awards, student memorabilia, and other items of value to alumni have yet to be allotted; however, the items will probably be sold with the rest of the property. The date of the final sale has not been given, and there is no official statement from the former college.
