Adventist University of Haiti Resumes Operations After Forced Closure

The Adventist University of Haiti (UNAH), located in Carrefour, Port-au-Prince, reopened on February 21, 2024, four weeks after a security incident where armed individuals entered the campus on January 23, 2024. According to Inter-American Division news, the university president, Dr. Sénèque Edmond, announced the reopening, emphasizing the institution’s commitment to continue its educational mission despite the existing security concerns.
According to Dr. Edmond, the decision to resume activities is based on trust in protective measures and the necessity of continuing education. He acknowledged that while the majority of students have returned to campus, some remain unable to, due to logistical challenges across the country.
Following the reopening, the university participated in a four-day national fasting and prayer event initiated by the Adventist Church in Haiti. This event aimed to address the broader issue of violence affecting various communities, including educational institutions, across Haiti. Faculty, staff, and students gathered for multiple prayer sessions at the university’s auditorium.
Pastor Pierre Caporal, president of the Adventist Church in Haiti, expressed solidarity with those affected by the ongoing violence and encouraged continued faith and prayer for the nation’s wellbeing. Inter-American Division president Pastor Elie Henry also supported the initiative, emphasizing the importance of daily prayer and reflection.
The nationwide call to prayer saw active participation from local churches, with members coming together to pray for peace and stability in Haiti. The initiative reflects the broader community’s response to the challenges faced by the Adventist Church in Haiti, which has seen the closure of 15 churches and displacement of over 3,500 members due to violence.
UNAH, along with the wider Adventist community in Haiti, which includes more than 500,000 members, continues to navigate the complexities of operating in a challenging security environment. The church oversees 1,330 congregations and operates a network of educational and healthcare institutions across the country.
