ADRA Advocates for Environmental Stewardship & Sustainability
22 April 2024 |
The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is leading a global campaign called #GoGreenWithADRA to celebrate Earth Day. This initiative encourages communities in the U.S. and around the world to participate in activities such as environmental cleanups, gardening, and tree planting to promote sustainability and raise awareness of environmental issues, according to their recent press release.
“In the face of an increasingly volatile climate, the world faces unprecedented challenges to anticipate and respond to the impact of climate volatility,” says Imad Madanat, ADRA’s Vice President for Humanitarian Affairs, in the article. “Our projects seek to equip the most at-risk populations to prepare and mitigate against unanticipated disasters while simultaneously protecting the environment.”
This year’s Earth Day theme, “Planet vs. Plastics,” focuses on combating plastic pollution, a severe threat to ecosystems and human health. In a pioneering project in Mauritania, ADRA repurposed 34,000 plastic bottles to construct a health center and homes, showcasing innovative solutions to waste management.
ADRA is also implementing eco-friendly projects globally, such as climate-smart agriculture in Congo, organic farming in Fiji, greenhouse setups in El Salvador, reforestation in Madagascar, and the introduction of drought-resistant crops in Honduras and Kenya.
Collaborating with international partners such as the ICRC and EcoAct, ADRA is developing tools like the Humanitarian Carbon Calculator to measure and reduce the carbon footprint of their projects, aligning with their long-term environmental goals.
