Walla Walla University Students Plan Walkout Against Administration
11 March 2025 |
Walla Walla University students announced a walkout for 10:45 AM Pacific time, in peaceful protest against censorship and discrimination. On the Instagram account @wwu_stand_together, from a group independent of the official university, three posts beginning on March 5 shared information regarding the walkout. The March 10 post shares these details:
“In recent weeks, Walla Walla University’s administration has taken discriminatory action against its students based on sexual orientation. These actions include both censorship of a senior recognition video containing the Pride flag and the disqualification of the only ASWW presidential candidate for being in an openly same-sex relationship. This discrimination fails to convey the love and acceptance Walla Walla University promises to uphold for its students.
“In response, we, the students of Walla Walla University, stand to remind its administration that all students, regardless of gender, religion, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, etc., have the right to participate in university functions and that every voice matters. Join us Tuesday, March 11, at 10:45 am on the Administration Building lawn to take a stand against the discriminatory actions of Walla Walla University’s administration.”
The walkout included an open mic event where participants could answer the question, “What does a safe and inclusive Walla Walla University look like to you?” They requested that all responses remain respectful and civil. Students were also encouraged to email their professors, informing them of the reason for the walkout and inviting them to participate. The event was live-streamed on the University Pride Walla Walla Instagram account. Media coverage from local news outlets was expected. A petition was also circulated online to protest the decisions made by the administration.
Many students and alumni have responded to the social media posts—some in support, some in opposition, and some with genuine questions about the reason behind the walkout.
