ATSS: Who Decides? Exploring Realms of Adventist Moral Authority

2 March 2022  | by Gerald Winslow I look forward to meeting with the AT Sabbath Seminar this coming Sabbath. For those who would benefit from study of a passage from Scripture, let me propose Acts 15, the entire chapter. That’s a bit long for a memory verse. But, if you’re willing, you’ll have opportunity to […]

ATSS: Dr. Katrina Blue on Spirituality and Seventh-day Adventists

17 February 2022  | What is Biblical spirituality? Seventh-day Adventists speak of spiritual experience, of feeling God’s presence, but in practice much of our spirituality seems rooted in doctrines and interpretation. Ellen White encourages us to experience God, but also says we shouldn’t trust feelings and experiences. Our top church leaders warn against meditation and […]

Does Our Evangelism Bring Jesus Back?

26 January 2022  | Adventists have consistently maintained that there is a direct link between the global preaching of their message and the timing of Christ’s return. However, will we Adventists ever succeed in communicating the gospel to every human being? Does the global communication of the gospel depend only—or even mostly—on us? And is […]

Signs for All Times, Part 1: How Timely Are the Signs?

12 January 2022  | Are the “signs of the times” signs of all times? The biblical perspective on “the time of the end” is that we are in the time of the end since Jesus left this earth at his ascension. During these last 20 centuries “signs” have told believers that history is moving in […]

The Agonies of the Advent: Christmas without all the “calm and bright” stuff

22 December 2021  | Christmas falls on a Saturday this year, which no doubt will have many Sabbath keeping congregations making it a high day. (I know of pockets of Sabbath keepers who forbid any mention or celebration of Christmas in their official liturgies…but we will not mention them further.)   It likely will be a […]

Maury D. Jackson: Remapping Adventist Theology

15 December 2021  | The 28 fundamental beliefs of Seventh-day Adventists turns out to be a poor tool for capturing the tapestry, richness, nuances, complexity, and downright contested differences in theological convictions among the members who make up the religious community. As the denominational family grows, ecclesiastical maneuvers jockey to hide the differences that reside […]

Adventists & Ecumenism: Preliminary Questions

8 December 2021  | In this class I wish to step back a little and look at the big picture before we focus on more specific questions. That is, we will address three or four preliminary points/questions that should be addressed before deciding anything about ecumenism for Adventists. These include: The meaning of salvation in […]

Exploring the Deeper Reaches of Gratitude

24 November 2021  | I know that a lot of people think gratitude is a weak topic. I don’t. If gratitude is merely courtesy, then why does it come up throughout the Bible as an essential ingredient of the Christian life? David is always thanking God. Jesus is always thanking God. Paul is always thanking […]

ATSS: The Authority of the Local Adventist Church

17 November 2021  | By Todd Leonard A silver lining in what has otherwise been the dark cloud of the General Conference in Session’s refusal to endorse ordination equality is that it forced union conferences to recognize and reassert their authority over the issuing of ordination credentials. As unions in North America and Europe now […]

Seasons of the Soul in the Psalms

10 November 2021  | Our Adventist Today Sabbath Seminar concerns an aspect of Christian spirituality and worship and its implications for Adventism. Our focus will be on the Psalms, the Old Testament book of worship and praise par excellence. These psalms also permeate the New Testament, which quotes and alludes to them more than one […]

Adventist Tomorrow: Fresh Ideas While Waiting for Jesus, by Jack Hoehn

ADVENTIST TOMORROW by Jack Hoehn has become the best-selling book that Adventist Today has published, selling over 850 copies so far (480+ in the paperback and  370+ in the electronic Kindle version).  It is being read by Adventist College and University students.  It is being read in Canada, in Australia,  in South Africa, in Kenya and in Spain, Germany, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.

Who is reading Jack’s book?  Jonathan Butler said it is on his reading list.  Smuts Van Rooyen says he is enjoying it.  Pastors John Hughson and Kenneth Preston have highly recommended it.  Pastor Kevin McGill in Seattle quoted from the book in one of his sermons.   Carmen Lau has read the book.  Jennifer Ogden, Beverly Beem, Linda Nottingham,  Cherri-Ann Farquharson, Gina Olberg have all read it with positive reviews.

Even Clifford Goldstein told Jack he liked the chapter on Intoxicants and got a new idea from the chapter Not a Rib, “but not much else.” (Jack accepts this as good a review from Cliff as he could ever hope for!)

You too don’t have to agree with Jack to read the book.  The ideas discussed in the book are important for all caring Adventists to carefully consider.  It is up to you to decide what you want to do about these issues.  Is there a future for Adventism as well as a past?  And what might that future look like?

Readers who like the book say:   It’s a good read.  I have enjoyed it immensely.  A very valuable piece of work.  Once I started it, I could not put it down.  Very well written.  An unprecedented and transformative rescue of Adventist thought.  A genuine pleasure and a relief.  Added very richly to my heart, soul and mind.

The book is good for individual consideration.  It can be even better as the basis for group discussions — Sabbath School classes, book clubs,  classrooms, workers’ retreats focusing on the challenges of tomorrow.  After you read your copy share it with someone else, or gift them their own copy.   There are 92,000 SDA congregations in the world, most of  them should be having  discussions on important topics like these.
