The Messenger

The angel Gabriel it was—
the same whose flaming sword,
in ancient lore,
the gates of Eden barred to wayward Eve
and all her wand’ring race—
He it was,
long after,
said to second Eve
in tones of shielding grace,
“Fear not, O favored one.
Through you
the way back home is come.”
