Oregon Conference Suspends 2024 Camp Meetings Amid Financial Concerns
23 April 2024 |
In an effort to stabilize its financial situation, the Oregon Conference has decided to suspend its annual Spanish and English camp meetings for 2024. The Executive Committee, under the guidance of Elder Linrud, made this decision on April 18 as part of a broader strategy to avoid accruing significant debt.
The decision is influenced by the financial burden that camp meetings place on the budget, requiring approximately $380,000 to produce. This suspension was seen as a necessary measure to ensure the financial health of the conference; however, there are plans for a full reinstatement of the camp meetings in 2025.
Elder Linrud and the conference leadership expressed their shared disappointment over the decision, saying in the article that “as important as camp meeting is to all of us, we simply couldn’t justify taking on that much debt as we work to bring our budget back into balance.”
In response to the suspension, Elder Linrud has initiated discussions with pastors about organizing smaller regional convocations to maintain community engagement and spiritual growth. These discussions are still in the early stages, and the community is encouraged to participate in future conversations.
The Oregon Conference asks for prayers and invites those with inquiries or concerns regarding the decision to contact Juan Pacheco at juan.pacheco@oc.npuc.org.
