Oakwood University claimed victory at the 35th Honda Campus All-Star Challenge (HCASC) on April 12, 2024, earning the national championship and a $100,000 grant for their institution, according to NAD News. The event, celebrated as the foremost academic competition for historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the U.S., saw Oakwood compete against 31 other teams, securing their fourth title in their 28th appearance. Notable contenders in the top four included Howard University, Spelman College, and Morehouse College.
The Oakwood team, under the guidance of coach Steven Lai Hing and led by captain Jonathan Gunthrope, with members Hannah Browning, Janiah Hinds, and Grayson Mejia, was lauded for their exceptional teamwork and sportsmanship. Team member Grayson Mejia described the win as “unbelievable,” especially significant as it was his fourth year competing.
In the article, Oakwood President Leslie Pollard conveyed his deep pride in the team’s success. “This victory is more than just a win in a competition; it’s a reflection of the dedication, intelligence, and spirit of our students and the supportive community at Oakwood University. We are incredibly proud of our team’s accomplishment and the positive light they have shone on the academic excellence within the HBCU community.”
The HCASC, based on the College Bowl format, has been a platform for showcasing the intellectual and competitive spirit of students from HBCUs since its founding in 1989, involving around 150,000 students over the years. This year’s competition theme was “Live Your Dream.” Watch the 2024 Honda All-Star Challenge National Championship at this link on YouTube.
