Illuminate Convention Brings Artists to Southern’s Campus
28 January 2025 |
Last year, Southern Adventist University launched Illuminate, a two-day convention where poets, writers, musicians, artists, and literary academics collected. The event, which held printmaking workshops, scholarly seminars, and performances from acclaimed artists such as Propaganda, was so successful that the school will host it again this year.
The convention, which will be held from March 31 to April 1, is designed to inspire and encourage. The workshops offer hands-on guidance for new art forms, such as therapeutic drumming and blackout poetry. The seminars are broken up into Literature, with sessions like “Toni Morrison and the Limits of utopian thinking”; Music, which includes sessions such as “Remembrance as Experienced in the Works of Robert Shuman”; Visual Art, which includes “The Art of Attentiveness: looking close in the age of scrolling”; and Interdisciplinary, which includes “Stories that shape us: ritual, identity, and meaning.”
The speakers list includes powerhouses in their creative fields, eager to discuss creativity as a form of worshipful discipleship. For college students and members of the community, the convention is an amazing opportunity to see artists at their full power, refine and explore their creativity, and bridge the gap between their faith and their art.
The event is sponsored by ArtsBuild, AdventHealth, Times Free Press, The Generosity Trust, and Southern Adventist University’s Classic 90.5 WSMC Chattanooga Public Radio.
