ATSS: Horace Alexander, “Bible Stories for Women’s History Month”
27 March 2024 |
In recognition of March as Women’s History Month, it is worthwhile to look at the earliest biblically recorded women’s rights movement and the culture which, to this day, affects attitudes, policies, and the experiences of many women. The daughters of Zelophehad asserted their rights, and Moses, under God’s counsel, honored their protest (Numbers 27). However, their effort was subject to a common pattern affecting such movements then and now: accommodation and containment.
Later, the experience of Tamar the Canaanite demonstrates that some struggles are intergenerational and require sustained effort. We will examine her story, as presented in Genesis 38, with a view to finding principles relevant to women and men today. These stories have implications for gender roles, family life, women’s rights, women’s ordination, abortion, and situational ethics.

About our class:
- The AT Sabbath Seminar is intended to be a courteous forum. We discuss and ask questions politely. We don’t accuse, get angry, put people down, or judge the state of their salvation.
- Stick to the topic in both comments and chat discussion.
- Make your comments and questions short—don’t dominate.
- Keep your microphones muted unless you are called upon to make your comment or ask your question.
- Indicate your interest in speaking by raising your electronic hand—under the “reactions” button.
- Please use your name when you sign in! Not your phone number, not your initials. This will help us differentiate you from unwelcome guests who want to disrupt us. You can set your name after signing on by clicking on the 3 dots next to your picture, which drops down a menu.
We look forward to getting acquainted with you!
