30 August 2023 |
Debra Clements Brill, who once led as the vice president for ministries for the North American Division (NAD), passed away on August 27, 2023, in her Jamaica, Virginia, home, according to an obituary by NAD News. At 71, Brill left behind an extraordinary legacy of 33 years in denominational employment. Notably, she currently holds the record for the longest-serving vice president of the NAD and stands as the second woman to have filled this role.
Brill’s retirement in 2019 culminated her 21-year service as vice president. Upon this occasion, she remarked, “It’s been my great joy to work with gifted leaders who love God and His church!” The significance of her role was not lost on her colleagues. G. Alexander Bryant, NAD president, warmly remembered her, saying, “Debra was an unusual and unique blend of dignified strength, humility, compassion, vision, and calm perseverance.” Similarly, Bonita Joyner Shields, NAD associate secretary, expressed profound respect for Brill’s mentorship.
Throughout her tenure as vice president, Brill held numerous responsibilities, overseeing a broad range of ministries, from Adventist Development and Relief Agency to Women’s and Youth/Young Adult ministries. She played a pivotal role in launching the Adventist Women Leaders committee. However, her journey in the church began modestly. Starting as a volunteer in Potomac, Brill swiftly rose through the ranks, having held positions such as the Executive Director for Research and Development in the Pacific Union Conference. Her contributions to church programs, especially the Gracelink Sabbath School curriculum, remain commendable.
Brill’s career was marked not only by her achievements, but also by the immense respect and admiration she garnered from her peers. Chariolett Johnson, a close colleague, praised her, saying, “Known for her diplomacy and quiet strength, Debra has impacted so many.” Furthermore, Brill’s unwavering dedication to the church’s local ministry and her talent for navigating diverse ministries were widely recognized.
Behind the professional, Brill was a loving family woman, survived by her husband, children, and grandchildren. As final respects are paid, the Brill family has requested that donations be made in her memory to the Kirsten Wolcott Memorial Fund, reflecting her lifelong commitment to service.
