Candace Allison Brown, a 35-year-old teacher for Sawgrass Adventist School, turned herself in at Broward County Sheriff’s Office on Friday, November 22, accused of engaging in inappropriate and lewd sexual acts with a minor.
The minor in question is a 14-year-old male student. As a result, Brown was arrested and accused of “two counts of lewd and lascivious battery of a victim less than 16 years old and one count each of lewd and lascivious conduct and transmission of material harmful to a minor by electronic device,” according to CBS News.
According to the victim, the events occurred at Deerfield Beach between June 1 and June 30. Brown sent inappropriate videos of a sexual nature, kissing, and sexual contact. Her bond was set at $40,000 on Saturday morning.
Sawgrass Adventist School is a private school based in Plantation, Florida, for kindergarten to eighth-grade students. Though she is no longer listed as a teacher on the school website, Brown has been a math and history middle school teacher at Sawgrass since 2016, and detectives on the case suspect there are more victims.
Frank Runnels, vice president of education for Florida Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, said after an inquiry from CBS News Miami.
“We just received a report of inappropriate and illegal conduct by one of our teachers with regard to a student, and we are taking it very seriously. Because our commitment to student welfare and safety is our foremost priority, we are cooperating fully with law enforcement and have promptly removed the teacher from our campus and her position.”
Brown’s court date is currently undetermined, and it is unknown what led her to turn herself in.
