Editorial: “Giving Tuesday: Don’t Let Them Take Away Open Reporting and Dialogue”
As the aroma of Thanksgiving tofurkey fades and we recover from the Black Friday shopping frenzy, Giving Tuesday is just around the corner on December 3rd – a day when generosity takes center stage. Think of it as Black Friday for non-profits, where instead of snagging deals on consumer goods, we invest in causes that matter. This year, it’s not just about opening our wallets; it’s about opening doors to truth and transparency in our Adventist community.
A concerning development
This fall, the General Conference adopted a policy that could significantly impact the flow of information within our church. The new rule makes it a disciplinary offense for church employees, including pastors and communication staff, to share information with independent Adventist journalists. This means that those who are often best positioned to provide insights into church developments may now face professional consequences for doing so.
This policy change creates a challenging environment for open dialogue and transparent reporting within our church. It potentially limits the ability of publications like Adventist Today (AT) to provide comprehensive coverage of important issues affecting our faith community. Your support is crucial in ensuring that independent voices can continue to contribute to the conversation about our church’s present and future.
At AT, we’ve always believed in fostering open and honest dialogue. Your support this Giving Tuesday isn’t just a donation; it’s a declaration. A declaration that says, “We deserve to know what’s happening in our church, and we value diverse perspectives.”
Your support matters
Your generosity reaches far beyond your local congregation. With readers worldwide, including a growing audience in the Global South, your support helps foster a global conversation about faith, transparency, and the future of our church.
This Giving Tuesday, as you contemplate where to direct your generosity, remember: a donation to AT is an investment in truth, transparency, and the very essence of our community. It’s a chance to say, “We believe in the importance of open reporting” to those who might prefer a more restricted flow of information.
Join us in this crucial mission. Visit atoday.org/donate to make your impact felt. Together, we can ensure that our church remains a place of open communication, honest reporting, and shared growth.
