Editorial: Dr. Eva B Dykes, an Inspiring Adventist Woman
March is Women’s History Month, a perfect time to celebrate the often unsung contributions of women. I want to tell you about Eva B. Dykes, who in 1921 became the first Black American woman to complete the requirements for a doctoral degree. Though she died in 1986, Dr. Dykes remains a symbol of courage, scholarship, and spiritual commitment.
After teaching for 15 years at Howard University, Dr. Dykes chose service over prestige by joining the faculty of the then-small and unaccredited Oakwood College, becoming the head of the English department and the first faculty at Oakwood to hold a doctoral degree. She helped establish Oakwood’s prestigious honors program, which is now named after her. She mentored thousands of students in her 30 years’ teaching there, many who went on to become leaders, educators, and pastors.
Dr. Dykes dedicated her life to Adventist education and wrote a regular column in Message magazine until 1984, just two years before her death. She was a pioneer for both Black Americans and women in academia, demonstrating excellence in scholarship while staying committed to her faith. She spent over 40 years mentoring students and was deeply involved in music and church life. She wrote and arranged many hymns, and supported Adventist youth in worship. In 1973 the Oakwood College library was named in her honor.
Eva B. Dykes’ achievements were extraordinary not only for her race but also for her gender. As we honor Dr. Eva B. Dykes this women’s history month, let us remember that the church is strengthened, not threatened, by the gift of its women. Dr. Dykes gave her life in service to the Adventist Church, not for titles or recognition, but because she believed in its mission. Today, women continue to serve with the same faith, courage, and excellence, yet without the full acknowledgement they deserve. Let us continue to insist that our sisters be recognized for their achievements, remembering that in the kingdom of God, daughters will prophesy, preach, and lead.
