Dr. Richard Osborn Selected as La Sierra University Interim President

La Sierra University has announced the appointment of Dr. Richard Osborn as its interim president. This decision follows the resignation of Joy Fehr on September 17, with Provost April Summitt serving as acting president in the interim. Osborn officially assumed the role on Monday, October 23.
Bradford C. Newton, university board chair, expressed strong support for Osborn’s appointment, emphasizing his vast experience and knowledge. He also praised Summitt for her dedication during the transitional phase. Summitt expressed her gratitude for the chance to serve in an expanded capacity and is eager to collaborate with Osborn on new university initiatives.
Osborn boasts a rich history in Seventh-day Adventist education, having held roles ranging from teacher to administrator. His tenure includes 12 years of vice-presidential service related to education for the Seventh-day Adventist church, and a presidency at Pacific Union College. He also spent a decade at the WASC Senior College and University Commission overseeing the accreditation process for various institutions.
In addition to his comprehensive professional background, Osborn has served on numerous educational boards, including those of Kettering Medical Center, Kettering College, and Loma Linda University Health. He has also consulted for educational institutions globally and is assisting Qatar in establishing its inaugural higher education accreditation agency.
Osborn’s academic credentials include an M.A and Ph.D. from the University of Maryland. He also has a personal connection to La Sierra University, attending during his freshman year when it was La Sierra College. His family history with the university goes back generations, further motivating his acceptance of the interim position.
Commenting on his appointment, Osborn mentioned his deep-rooted loyalty to the university, stemming from his parents’ association and the role of the institution in his family’s history. He sees this opportunity as a chance to give back, despite the challenges ahead, emphasizing the importance of prayer and innovative solutions moving forward.
