ATSS: Warren Trenchard, “The Three Angels: Then, and Now”
21 February 2024 |
The imagery of Revelation has fascinated and challenged Christians for centuries. Most—including Adventists—came to see these as predictions of events throughout history and anticipations of present realities or current entities. This is especially true of Seventh-day Adventists’ self-proclaimed status as the Remnant Church. Central to this self-understanding is the historic Adventist interpretation of the proclamations of three angels in Revelation 14:6–12, with special focus on the final proclamation as the Third Angel’s Message. The latter serves not only as the raison d’être of Adventism but also is understood to constitute its distinctive message, especially its focus on the seventh-day sabbath.
The purpose of this study is to examine Revelation 14:6–12 in its immediate context and that of the entire document to determine if this interpretation is valid. Does Revelation consist of a series of progressive, multi-century scenarios that extend from the writer’s day to the anticipated end of time? As part of the whole document, does the section identified as 14:6–12 constitute a threefold set of descriptions of a special, end-time and pure form of Christianity that will be characterized by the proclamations of these three angels and especially the third? In other words, is Revelation 14:6–12 about us?

- Make your comments and questions short—don’t dominate.
- Keep your microphones muted unless you are called upon to make your comment or ask your question.
