ATSS: Ron Graybill, “A New Creed, for a New Day”
21 August 2024 |
Given all we have learned in the last half century (from 1970 until now) about Ellen White’s writings—how they were written, what sources she used, how they were edited and compiled, and how she and the church explained and defended her inspiration—how might our Fundamental Belief on the gift of prophecy be restated? How can we affirm her prophetic gift and honor her contributions to our church and to our own spiritual lives, without denying the results of recent scholarship about her role and work?
Ron Graybill will chart his own role in and reactions to the last 50 years of scholarship about Ellen White, and suggest a valid way of stating our belief in her prophetic gift.
Teacher:
Ron Graybill is a graduate of La Sierra University and the Adventist Theological Seminary. He served as a pastor in Ukiah and Oakland, California, before being called to the Ellen G. White Estate to assist Arthur L. White in preparing his six-volume biography of his grandmother. During his 13 years at the White Estate he was ordained as a pastor by Neal Wilson and Robert Pierson—at the same time that they ordained Ed Zinke, who has served in the Biblical Research Institute. Also during his tenure at the White Estate, he acquired a PhD in American Religious History from The Johns Hopkins University. However, without getting the appropriate permission, he used some unreleased Ellen White letters in his doctoral dissertation which, along with other problems in the dissertation, resulted in his leaving the White Estate and being reassigned to other church employment. For some years he edited the Columbia Union Visitor, and later taught history at La Sierra University. Even more recently, his doctoral dissertation, The Power of Prophecy, which caused so much difficulty back in 1983, has been reprinted by Oak and Acorn Publications, an entity of the Pacific Union Conference.
