The annual meeting of the Association of Adventist Women is scheduled for October 16-18 on the campus of Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, Tennessee. Two prominent women in the leadership of the Adventist denomination will be among the speakers.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Ella Smith Simmons, the first and only woman to serve as a vice president of the denomination's General Conference (GC). Pastor Sandy Roberts, president of the denomination's Southeastern California Conference, will also address the gathering.
The theme of this year's meeting is "Lifting as We Climb: Women Mentoring Women." Other activities will include an agape supper and the banquet where those who are being honored as Adventist Woman of the Year in several categories will be announced.
The organization is on record in support of extending clergy ordination to women who are serving the denomination as pastors. A recommendation on this topic will be considered by the denomination's governing body this fall in preparation for the full session of the GC next summer in San Antonio, Texas; an event which occurs only once every five years.
