Adventist Ironman Raises Over A$9,000 for ADRA Australia

Andrew Thompson recently completed his first Ironman Triathlon and raised over A$9,000 for ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency) Australia. The Ironman Triathlon consists of a 3.8-km swim, a 180-km cycle, and a full 42.2-km marathon run. Thompson finished the triathlon in just over 14 hours and 37 minutes on May 7, 2023.
According to the Adventist Record, Thompson decided to undertake the Ironman Triathlon as a way to raise money for ADRA Australia and support the people they help. He believes that the physical pain and suffering he experienced during the race should serve a bigger purpose. The people he is raising money for face difficulties every day, and he wanted to show his solidarity by taking on a grueling challenge.
“I decided to do an Ironman Triathlon to raise money to support the people that ADRA helps,” Thompson said. “What’s the point of all that self-inflicted pain and suffering just for the superficial bragging rights of being an Ironman? For me, it needed to have a bigger purpose. The people that I’m raising money to help are doing it tough day in and day out, not just for 15 hours.”
As someone who loves the outdoors, adventure, and fitness challenges, Thompson constantly seeks new ways to push himself. He has previously engaged in activities such as rock climbing, kayaking, and alpine expeditions. Triathlons became his latest passion, and he became hooked after his first race in 2021.
Long-distance running, cycling, and swimming have brought mental focus, joy in the present moment, and a break from distractions for Thompson. Learning about the full-distance Ironman Triathlons, he was captivated by the challenge they presented.
Thompson’s fundraising goal was to reach $A5,650, which corresponds to $A25 for each of the 226 kilometers he covered during the Ironman. However, as of the writing of this article, he is currently at A$9,797.
