ADRA Program Improves Literacy in El Salvador

One thousand-eight adults graduated from The Adventist Development and Relief Agency’s (ADRA) literacy program in El Salvador on February 2. The certificates were for completing reading and writing programs, offering the opportunity for further education. According to an Adventist Review article,
“In partnership with the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology (MINEDUCTYT), ADRA El Salvador has been running literacy programs across 12 departments of the country for more than 15 years. The initiative has grown with support from the Seventh-day Adventist Church, local municipalities, and community organizations….”
The 2024 census confirmed that 9.4 percent of El Salvador’s population remains illiterate. Though addressing adult illiteracy has improved significantly in recent years, more than 400,000 people age 10 and older are still unable to read or write. The program has partnered with local government, providing certified teachers and ADRA volunteers for the 119 groups of adult students. The graduates have left with a high school or grade level reading ability, encouraging adults that they can continue their pursuit for education no matter their age or circumstance.
David Poloche, director of ADRA Inter-America, praised the ADRA El Salvador team for their unwavering commitment to improving lives. “This literacy program has left a lasting impact, not just through education but also through the values of excellence, integrity, and the teachings of Jesus,” Poloche said. “As you continue on your life journey, think about the legacy you can leave behind by helping others improve.”
