Calvin Rock, Retired GC Vice President, Records Promotional Video for Kamala Harris
24 October 2024
Calvin B. Rock has spent six decades as a pastor, church administrator, and writer. He was president of Oakwood University from 1971 to 1985, and a general vice president of the General Conference (GC) from 1985 until his retirement in 2002.
He can now add political endorsement to his resume: he has recorded a video supporting Kamala Harris for Evangelicals for Harris.
In the video, Rock says,
I was born in the Bronx July 4, 1930. I was 18, and I got on a Trailways bus to go to college. The driver stopped the bus and said, “Hey fella, you got to go to the back” The ministry had a dual responsibility. I tried to teach my people and alert them to the fact that they needed to get involved, and we fought [for] integrated movies and department stores, and sat on lunch counters, and things began to change. “Make America great again” doesn’t fit my sense of Adventist joy, prosperity, equality. It is pulling back the covers, so that a lot of people who been quiet can now be bold. We don’t want to go back there again. The old saying is you can’t win the fight if you’re not in the ring. As I look at these two presidential candidates, I resonate with Kamala Harris.
