A Reddit post under the heading “Am I Overreacting?: Church member is harassing me,” describes a threatening conversation with an Adventist church board member after a couple explains why they had left the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The Wednesday (April 23) post has received 27,000 reactions and 5600 comments.
The post begins,
“Brief Summary: my husband and I left a Christian church 2 years ago and he recently decided to make a video explaining why we left. A church member decided to message me and we had the conversation shown in the screenshots. I informed my husband and suggested his next video should be showing this conversation in order to discourage this type of behavior. He says to just ignore it. Am I overreacting?”
She posts the following conversation:
Church member: Good morning, Karina, we saw your husband’s video and just wanted to know if we can visit you this week to have a conversation. Please let me know. Thank you!
Karina: Good morning! Do you mean to visit and have a nice conversation as friends, or about the video that my husband shared?
Church member: Of course about the video. We feel terrible that you all decided to leave the church!
Karina: You are welcome to visit us, but please just know we have no plans to be part of the church anymore.
Church member: You have no idea how many times we have heard this. Everyone always comes back.
Karina: We understand, but please respect our decision. You are welcome to visit, we are still friends with many people from the church. But we will no longer be part of the church.
Church member: The same way your husband “respected” our church by saying the conference is irresponsible?
Karina: I don’t want to argue with you. If this is the reason you want to visit, then I don’t think its a good idea. Have a good day.
Church member: We don’t want to argue but some things do need to be clarified.
Karina: You can just text us your clarifications. We don’t think a visit is required.
Church member: No, your husband needs to clarify a few things on another video.
Karina: I don’t think so.
Church member: Yes we think so. The board has seen the video and it is not right to spread lies.
Karina: #1. Everything he shared is the truth #2. We don’t care what the board thinks. #3. You are overreacting
Church member: It’s not right to spread lies all over the internet
Karina: You are talking as if thousands of people saw the video. Please. We are no longer part of the church. Have a good day
Church member: Please answer the phone. There are a few things that need to be clarified. Please call me when you have a chance.
Karina: I’m sorry, but if you call or message me again I will block your number.
Church member: If you do then another board member will be in touch with you.
In the comments, Karina posts a link to her husband’s video entitled “Why We Left the SDA Church,” and adds, “And its sad, because in the video he even clarifies that we never had issues with people, just the system.”
