On May 7, the president of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, opened a Seventh-day Adventist Dorcas rally attended by nearly 30,000 Dorcas Mothers. Hosted in Rusangu, Monze District, the event was an open display of support for the women who led the ministry, carrying out the legacy of Tabitha, also known as Dorcas, in Acts 9:36-42.
The president, an Adventist, posted about the rally on his Facebook. He praised the women for their impact on the community through strength and compassion. The post concluded by acknowledging the power of women and adding that:
“The Government of Zambia remains firmly committed to inclusivity, economic recovery, and social transformation. We recognize the Church, not only as a moral compass, but as a critical development partner, especially in uplifting the vulnerable, restoring dignity, and opening doors of opportunity for every Zambian.”
The event, held under the theme “To Deepen and Deploy,” was also an act of interfaith solidarity, promoting a spirit of unity among the women representatives from different churches. The Dorcas Society is indeed a powerful force within Zambia. The ministry operates mainly in the Democratic Republic of Congo and East African countries, through schools, clinics, and institutions, providing hospital aid and support to the homeless, survivors of war, and the marginalized. Dorcas Mothers are known for their advocacy against child marriages, and offering aid to widows and orphans.
Promoting active partnerships with the Zambian government leads some to hope that the Dorcas Society can broaden its reach with greater resources.
