Creatives Collect at Society of Adventist Communicators

From October 17-19, writers, designers, videographers, journalists, and communications directors gathered at the Oak Brook (Illinoid) Hilton outside Chicago, Illinois, for the annual Society of Adventist Communicators (SAC) Convention. Though often under the radar, the event is highly anticipated for those in the communications field.
As a freelance writer, I discovered the convention when asked to cover it for Adventist Journey. Through networking, I found the majority of my contracts and a strong contact list of fellow communicators. Three years later I returned to cover the convention again, as the news editor for Adventist Today, a breakout speaker for writing, and a panelist. Communication is founded on the ability to connect and collaborate, fostering networking opportunities, and bringing together the communicators within our church is what makes SAC and events like it so valuable.
The general sessions have always endeavored to bring in experienced communicators whose careers span within and outside of the church. Writer and journalist Bekah McNeel spoke on the importance of not allowing political language to dictate human issues, preventing us as writers and Christians from connecting. Gregg Dunn and Kevin Lampe shared the need for intentional language while discussing their experience as crisis communicators. Dewey Murdick explored the nuance of AI and how it can be used for church organizations. From the main speakers to the breakout presenters, the SAC organizers endeavored to find individuals who can mentor and enlighten.
This was how the SAC approached me to be a breakout speaker, offering an hour and a half to share practical advice acquired throughout my career. As someone with experience as both a speaker and audience member, I find a level of exchange that always makes the workshops engaging. Once the information is given, the audience has an opportunity to ask questions and request elaboration, developing a dialogue with the speaker that often continues throughout the convention. After the Tech Talk on Friday morning which often includes a raffle, designers, podcasters, and videographers gather to compare new programs and their favorite tech. Speakers selling their latest book stop to discuss their experience with other writers, sharing their history with publishing. At the banquet on Saturday night, business cards are shared, new project ideas are discussed, and conversations for lasting collaborations are begun.
Bjorn Karlman, Executive Director of Adventist Today stated:
“The SAC Conference turned out to be just what I needed – a chance to connect with fellow Adventists who understand the world of media and communication. Between the casual hallway conversations and thought-provoking sessions, I picked up valuable insights about working with AI in media. It was wonderful catching up with old friends and making new connections with people who share the same passions. A highlight was learning from the Onyx Family, whose media empire has garnered over 10 million followers and 5 billion views worldwide, with content reaching platforms like Disney+, Hulu, and Amazon. Their success in creating family-friendly content while staying true to their values was truly inspiring. The whole experience reminded me why I love being part of this community of communicators who care about sharing meaningful messages.”
Loren Seibold, executive editor for Adventist Today, was also in attendance and shared his appreciation for the networking opportunities “Everybody is able to talk and collaborate in such a helpful way. You get to meet so many people who can offer guidance and insight. That was by far the best part.”
Communication thrives when a connection is prioritized. On Friday night, after the high of a vespers service, participants gathered around the bonfire to make s’mores. In the cool evening air, the light of the bonfire showed students meeting seasoned communicators in their field, fellow creatives sharing ideas and making plans, and the joy of meeting professionals with a shared passion.
