“I like this article! Just one thought on Colossians 2:
Paul was not saying that because of the cheirographan that observances like the sabbath were resultant and not causative of salvation. That sounds like trying to save the SDA position on sabbath observance.
Instead, he was classifying the sabbath with the other holy days and even dietary practices that he called shadows of things to come, but the reality is Christ. Because of this, and because their debt was already canceled at the cross, they were to let no one judge them regarding any of these observances. No one was to pressure them into them or condemn them should they not adopt them.
Paul was fighting a common dynamic that happened in his churches between Jewish and Gentile believers, albeit in its own form in Colosse. Sabbath and any so called external observance from the Torah are ancillary matters and, to use the language of Colossians, do not affect the fullness that believers have in Christ, whether observant or not.
SDAism needs to reevaluate the Pauline letters. I think the article needed to go a bit further.”
“Alcorn’s ridiculous specificity made me laugh out loud. And reminded me of an old joke:
————
There was a rich man who was very much aggrieved because he had worked very hard for his money, and he wanted to be able to take it with him to Heaven.
So he began to pray that he might be able to take some of his wealth.
An angel heard his plea and appeared to him. ‘Sorry, but you can’t take your wealth with you.’
The man implored the angel to speak to God to see if He might bend the rules.
The angel reappeared and announced that God had decided to make an exception and was allowing him to take one suitcase with him.
Overjoyed, the man gathered his largest suitcase, filled it with pure gold bars, and placed it beside his bed.
Soon afterward the man died and showed up at the pearly gates.
St. Peter, seeing the suitcase, said, ‘Hold on, you can’t bring that in here!’
But the man explained to St. Peter that he had permission and asked him to verify his story with the Lord.
Sure enough, St. Peter returned, saying, ‘You’re right. You are allowed one carry- on bag, but I’m supposed to check its contents before letting it through.’
St. Peter opened the suitcase to inspect the worldly items that the man found too precious to leave behind and exclaimed, ‘You brought pavement?'”
“Overall I appreciate the point this is trying to make. However, there was one paragraph that caught my attention as a First Nations person.
‘When did America become a place where people take joy from the suffering of fellow citizens? Celebrating job losses, cheering immigrant arrests, ignoring terrified schoolchildren, and applauding when neighbors lose public assistance is the new reality we are living in.’
We have already survived an apocalypse on our Nations. All of these (except Europeans were the immigrants invading our countries) were done, and in some cases continue to be done against us. The white supremacist, imperialistic, and colonial systems both the U.S. and Canada are built on and continue to govern from were created to do exactly this.
‘When did America . . . .’ From the very beginning of its inception. That is what needs to be confronted. Otherwise we are getting exactly what the system was created for. Arrivants and non-Caucasian immigrants can also speak to their own experience to answer that ‘when’ question.”
“There are a lot of rural hospitals and health clinics in the same situation. Many if not all of them nonprofit, and in many if not all states.
Hospitals already take a loss on the care they give to many of the uninsured and underinsured. Yet by law and by ethics they have to give care.
To many of these patients, if seen before they were in a health crisis, could have been cared for, for a lot less money, had they been able to be seen by a physician earlier in the health decline.
These are not new issues, but if things stay as it is, with this new legislation, it’s going to get a lot worse.”
“I feel like the question “Do I have to keep the Sabbath to be saved?” is the wrong question to ask. Rather……Does God want me to keep the Sabbath? The Bible is pretty clear that He does. I don’t keep the Sabbath in order to be saved….I keep it because I am saved! And what a gift it is!”
