ATSS: Tammy L. Wiese, “The Cost of Sin: Reconstructing What Happened at the Cross”
18 June 2025 |
The praise group Elevation Worship in a beautiful song, O Come to the Altar (2016), sings that “Forgiveness was bought with the precious blood of Jesus Christ.” Some familiar gospel songs, such as “Jesus Paid it All” and “Nothing But the Blood of Jesus” express the same idea. Ellen White writes that “A full, complete ransom has been paid by Jesus, by virtue of which the sinner is pardoned and the justice of the law is maintained.” John Peckham, in his book God With Us, writes that Jesus legally defeated Satan on the cross when he paid for humanity’s sins (430-1).
We will explore whether forgiveness can be bought. Did Jesus pay for our sins to legally defeat Satan in order to forgive us? Is this how we should understand what happened on the cross?
