ATSS: Laura Ochs Wibberding, “Christian Nationalism in Global Perspective”
16 April 2025 |
Less than 100 days since the inauguration, Donald Trump’s second term is already chaotic and controversial. Why is the promised Christian America imprisoning undocumented immigrants out-of-country and cutting funding for health research at home and aid to refugees abroad?
And why have evangelicals largely encouraged these policies? What Christian values do they support?
While politics is complicated, understanding Christian nationalism is an important part of the conversation. Religion, ethnicity, and identity are powerful forces, and our modern world is full of “holy wars” which began centuries ago and continue as religious-ethnic conflicts today.
This presentation will examine “Christian America” within the global picture of religious nationalisms, and scan the story of America’s Christian heritage. Four distinct brands of Christian thinking have existed since the nation’s founding, and these continue to be in conflict in our civil religion today. The Adventist Church has historically supported one in particular.
