ATSS: Courtney Ray “Mental Health Mythbusting”
21 May 2025 |
Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers. 3 John 2
We Adventists say that we’re very interested in health. The extensiveness of Adventism’s hospital system is rivaled only by its educational system. It’s not uncommon for a health spotlight to be integrated into Sabbath worship or even evangelistic series. The health message has been an integral part of the denominational mission since its inception.
Yet the Adventist emphasis on health has almost exclusively been on physical health. Although it is equally important, mental wellness has not only been often overlooked, but in some ways seems to have been intentionally avoided. Misconceptions and stigma about mental healthcare deter many Christians, including Adventists, from seeking clinical expertise. Dr. Courtney Ray is both an ordained Adventist minister and a licensed clinical neuropsychologist. In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, she will delve into and dispel commonly held myths about mental health.
Teacher:
Pastor Courtney Ray earned her PhD in Neuroscience and Neuropsychology from Loma Linda University and her Master of Divinity from the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary at Andrews University. Although she’s a Bronx native, she’s lived and pastored churches in St. Joseph, Michigan; Berrien Springs, Michigan; Baltimore, Maryland; Hanford, California; Compton, California; and Inglewood, California. She is founder and owner of Array Psychological Assessments, which provides neuropsychological evaluations across the lifespan. She is one of the founders of the Society for Black Neuropsychology. But more important than where she’s been is where she’s going: she intends to make Heaven her home and hopes you desire, by God’s grace, to do the same
