Reclaiming the Prophet: How to Believe in Ellen White

“I must admit that I’m puzzled by the White Estate’s objection to the book. I agree here with Reinder that much, if not most, of the content has already been conceded as truthful by that institution, so what can possibly be objectionable? What does it mean for them to say that her prophetic gift isn’t emphasized enough, and that the book focuses too much on her humanity? What else can she possibly be if not human? We grant human traits even to the biblical prophets— Jeremiah was manic, Jonah uncooperative and petty, Ezekiel wildly hallucinating, Hosea burdened to over-share his personal life. (Those poor children!) Seems to me that denial doesn’t belong only to alcoholics. It pesters us who are ‘dry drunk perfectionists’ as well. Why keep hiding? As 12-Step recovery proposes, ‘we are only as sick as our secrets.’ And as Jesus reminds us, ‘the truth will set you free.’”
