Editorial: GC2025 & the View from the Balcony
In 2000, when I was four years old, I attended my first General Conference (GC) session in Toronto, Canada. My grandfather was a respected church administrator and pastor for 50 years, allowing us a chance to be in the epicenter of the event. My first GC Session and those afterwards were experienced from the delegate floor.
22 years later, I looked down from the bird’s nest of the press box. It paralleled, in a certain way, my relationship with my church. I am still within my denomination, but I have learned to see it with a bird’s eye view. How often do we become enveloped in the politics, doctrine, and traditions of our church but miss the big picture?
Critical decisions will be made at this GC session. However, we must remember that our faith is not in the institution but in God.
This July I will again be attending with Björn Karlman and Loren Seibold to report on the event. I am honored to work with respected colleagues, and eager to see the church in action. Though I shake my head at some opinions and praise others, I will try to maintain the bird’s eye view.
Seeing the big picture means we anchor ourselves in Christ. We must be active in the future of our church—but regardless of the motions made and the people elected, our Savior is Jesus Christ alone.
