Authority vs. Experience: What Shapes Christian Identity?

23 June 2022  | When famous Swedish chef Niklas Peter Ekstedt, whose greatest passions are food and health, visited Loma Linda, he was very impressed by the longevity of Adventist centenarians and even with our vegetarian dishes. However, when leaving the town he said that Loma Linda as a town was “pretty boring.” All he […]

ATSS: Austin Archer on Memory, Prophecy, and Changing Minds

15 June 2022  | Why and how do people change their minds? Why do we forget important things and remember trivial ones?  Do we remember events as accurately as we think we do? How come two people can be equally confident of different memories of the same event? And regarding prophecy, how do our minds […]

ATSS: Charles Scriven – Are Progressive Adventists Deluded?

8 June 2022  | Many Adventists who identify themselves as progressive wonder if they are delusional in dreaming of a more thoughtful and open-minded church—perhaps, especially, after a week like this one when we’ve watched the top body of our church trying to chart a way forward. In this class, Dr. Charles Scriven will make […]

ATSS: Reinder Bruinsma, “The Church Has a Future”

25 May 2022  | The Christian church is in trouble, in particular in the Western world. Many denominations see their membership decrease and experience an exodus of the younger generations. Postmoderns may still have an interest in spirituality, but they turn away from institutional Christianity. Current trends also affect the Seventh-day Adventist Church. While the […]

ATSS: Dr. Robert Johnston on Jesus as Parabler

11 May 2022  | Please read these rabbinic parables to prepare for Dr. Johnston’s class. From a literary standpoint the parables of Jesus were like those of his contemporaries, but their purpose and effect were dramatically different. This presentation will examine the importance of the parables, the narrative technique of Jesus, and how they should […]

ATSS: Misused Texts about Interpreting the Bible

4 May 2022  | Please read this essay to prepare for the study by Dr. Hemmings. Much of what we say we know about Biblical interpretation is derived from what the Bible says about itself. While the Bible is right to self-identify itself as an inspired book, the problem is that several of the oft-used […]

ATSS: Is Salvation Inclusive of All the World’s Many Religions?

20 April 2022  | Exclusive or Inclusive? by Raj Attiken The Christian view of human existence and of the world is largely shaped by the biblical story of a loving God who takes the initiative to put the world back into the good order for which it was designed. According to that story, the love […]

What Does It Mean for the Church to Love LGBTQ+ Adventists?

30 March 2022  | There is a lot of talk about love in the church, and about our relationship to LGBTQ+ Adventists. For their part, people who oppose same-sex marriage and transgender identity are clear that they still love LGBTQ+ people. But some feel that that it’s wrong for them to be pressured to change […]

Ecumenism for Adventists, Part 2: What Activities Can We Do With Other Christians?

23 March 2022  | In our last class with Dr. Fortin on ecumenism, he led us in exploring some basic questions that undergird Adventist fears of ecumenism, including preliminary points/questions that should be addressed before deciding anything about ecumenism for Adventists. These included: The meaning of salvation in Jesus. What is the Church? What is […]

ATSS: Worship vs. Life, Subservience to the Divine vs. Free Choice

16 March 2022  | In his essay entitled, “God and the Concept of Worship” James Rachels concludes: We have, then, a conflict between the role of worshiper, which by its very nature commits one to total subservience to God, and the role of moral agent, which necessarily involves autonomous decision making. The role of worshiper […]

ATSS: Forgotten Women Who Shaped the Church

9 March 2022  | The history of the Adventist church starts with a woman. That woman still holds the highest place of any of our church pioneers. She is quoted, used as a spiritual authority, exalted as a leader, and by some almost worshipped. But after Ellen White, our church history remembered almost none of […]

ATSS: “A New Reformation”: Adventist Fundamentalism and the Ku Klux Klan

23 February 2022  | by Michael W. Campbell The early twentieth century was a transformative time within American religion and culture. World War I contributed to a heightened sense of militancy; as did the 1918-19 influenza pandemic that only further reminded people of their own mortality. American Christianity experienced a bifurcation between the theological modernist […]

Adventist Tomorrow: Fresh Ideas While Waiting for Jesus, by Jack Hoehn

ADVENTIST TOMORROW by Jack Hoehn has become the best-selling book that Adventist Today has published, selling over 850 copies so far (480+ in the paperback and  370+ in the electronic Kindle version).  It is being read by Adventist College and University students.  It is being read in Canada, in Australia,  in South Africa, in Kenya and in Spain, Germany, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.

Who is reading Jack’s book?  Jonathan Butler said it is on his reading list.  Smuts Van Rooyen says he is enjoying it.  Pastors John Hughson and Kenneth Preston have highly recommended it.  Pastor Kevin McGill in Seattle quoted from the book in one of his sermons.   Carmen Lau has read the book.  Jennifer Ogden, Beverly Beem, Linda Nottingham,  Cherri-Ann Farquharson, Gina Olberg have all read it with positive reviews.

Even Clifford Goldstein told Jack he liked the chapter on Intoxicants and got a new idea from the chapter Not a Rib, “but not much else.” (Jack accepts this as good a review from Cliff as he could ever hope for!)

You too don’t have to agree with Jack to read the book.  The ideas discussed in the book are important for all caring Adventists to carefully consider.  It is up to you to decide what you want to do about these issues.  Is there a future for Adventism as well as a past?  And what might that future look like?

Readers who like the book say:   It’s a good read.  I have enjoyed it immensely.  A very valuable piece of work.  Once I started it, I could not put it down.  Very well written.  An unprecedented and transformative rescue of Adventist thought.  A genuine pleasure and a relief.  Added very richly to my heart, soul and mind.

The book is good for individual consideration.  It can be even better as the basis for group discussions — Sabbath School classes, book clubs,  classrooms, workers’ retreats focusing on the challenges of tomorrow.  After you read your copy share it with someone else, or gift them their own copy.   There are 92,000 SDA congregations in the world, most of  them should be having  discussions on important topics like these.
